McCain In Beverly Hills

McCain was laying low while the dust settled in the Democratic primary, but he's in general election mode now. At this "press availability," in Beverly Hills, McCain explains his position on Iraq, casting himself as the candidate with the courage to stay and finish the job.

We're not sure the public will view a determination to stay in Iraq as "courageous," but McCain is committed to the course. Even if he didn't believe we have to stay to establish stability in the country, his hawkish history on Iraq and early support of the surge make any other position untenable. To try to make this a winning issue (difficulty: very high) he uses Obama's relative lack of military experience to imply his withdrawal plan is naïve and weak-willed. Expect more of this as the general election heats up. Maybe that's why Ret. Gen. James Jones is rumored to be on Obama's short list of potential running mates.
