ISSUE:

In America today, educational inequity persists along socioeconomic and racial lines. Nine-year-olds growing up in low-income communities are already three grade levels behind their peers in high-income communities. Half of them won't graduate from high school. Those who do graduate will, on average, read and do math at the level of eighth graders in high-income communities. These disparities severely limit the life prospects of the 13 million children growing up in poverty today. But it doesn't have to be this way.

IDEA:

Teach For America is building a diverse, highly selective national corps of outstanding young professionals and recent college graduates who commit two years to teach in urban and rural public schools in our nation's lowest-income communities—and who become lifelong leaders for expanding educational opportunity. Additionally, alumni address these issues in the classroom and take on the underlying challenges from other sectors like medicine, law, and policy. One day, all children in this nation will have the opportunity to attain an excellent education.

IMPACT:

Currently, more than 5,000 teachers are leading classrooms in 26 urban and rural regions across the country, impacting the lives of nearly 440,000 students while working to end educational inequity. For the past 17 years, Teach For America has worked with school and community partners to recruit, train, and support outstanding teachers, having a positive impact on the lives of nearly 3 million students. More than 12,000 Teach For America alumni continue working from inside and outside the field of education for the fundamental changes necessary to ensure educational excellence and equity.

Hi friends

We've outgrown this 800-pixel wide website and we're moving to new digs.

While we pack up our things (i.e. articles and videos and stuff), we're shutting down commenting and new registrations on the current site.

Our new site is up and running at GOOD.is/.
