AaaK! AR U kidding?
Please tell me that my eyes deceived me! Did your article showing the average teacher salries in the states actually show the letters AK for Arkansas AND Alaska? It is a common mistake - Arkansas is AR - but for a magazine........I was surprised. Just because we recently named the watermelon our STATE VEGETABLE doesn't mean you can treat us that way! : )

Slight confusion.
I love this section of the magazine, (and I have all four issues) but I found this to be the most confusing out of all the infographics you've ever done. I figured it out, but I had to explain it to other people as well, because I obsessively show the magazine to other people. It just didn't say big enough that those were the average teacher's salaries. I guess I'm so used to automatically being able to look at the page and understand what is being expressed, that I no longer take time to really read it, do you know what I mean? You guys are good at your infographics....

a little confusing is it really apples to apples
Hard to tell from this infographic if the white collar worker you're comparing teacher's salaries to also has at least a bachelors (in some states masters are required), whether they're in jobs that require recertification every 6 years (as in my state), etc.
Are the avg teachers salaries listed an average of the actual salaries of teachers in that state or the average of the salary ranges a teacher can make? I've seen far too many comments about teachers salaries elsewhere that list the highest salary that teachers can make in a district. They never say whether there are any teachers that actually make that salary. For example the highest one in my husband's district is something like $65K. That's for someone who has taught for at least 20 years and has a masters. No one in his district is getting that salary.

Wah Wah Wah
If teachers would quit whining about their salaries and teach, maybe we'd all vote to increase their pay. No one goes into teaching thinking they'll be paid like a captain of industry, only to discover -- oh, my! -- the salary is only 30 or 40 percent higher than other white collar workers. And, please, let's not point out that American teachers, on average, have 63 vacation days a year. Poor, poor teachers! Every time I travel out of the country, I run into vacationing teachers. It seems they have both the time and money to travel the world, yet your average American student can't point out Turkey on a map.

Give me a break!
As a teacher I'm really tired of uninformed people commenting on how good we have it. We teach 180 days per year. At 10 hrs. per day, incluind grading and instructional preparation, that's 1800 hrs. per year. We also have summer trainings, parent teacher meetings, and community activities like PTO, Community Fairs etc. Now the average work year is 2080 hrs., minus vacations so don't tell me we have so much time off. Teachers work at a lower pay rate than any other college eduacted group plus we have to continue our eduaction so many have Masters degrees and more. In addition there is no other group that has more impact on our future, i.e. our young people. The reality is that the average tax payer, even though they voice support for teachers, is too cheap to pay for an adequate salary.
