False Choices

response to  Max Joseph, Chris Weller, Eve Marson, and Alan Wilkis's post John McCain

Barack Obama, in response to being called weak on foreign policy, repeated his plan to strike al Qaeda targets in the Peshawar region of Pakistan.

John McCain responded by claiming it was a sign of Obama’s inexperience to broadcast strategic plans for taking out terrorists in northern Pakistan. Note that McCain did not disagree with the plan, only with the fact that Senator Obama was announcing it publicly.

A few months ago, Nancy Pelosi led a congressional delegation to Pakistan and Afghanistan to persuade them to work together on routing Taliban forces straddling their borders. Shortly thereafter, Dick Cheney threatened to cut off military aid if they failed to do what Pelosi and her delegation proposed.

Democrats and Republicans are advocating exactly the same US foreign policy that led to the attacks on 9/11, and which will lead to further attacks and further US isolation.

The Pashtun people who occupy the Peshawar region between Pakistan and Afghanistan have lived there for centuries, and have little regard for the government’s of Pakistan, Afghanistan, or the United States. Military might does not scare the Pashtun, who defeated the Soviet Union and will defeat us if we’re foolish enough to challenge them.

Despite the rhetoric coming from Democrat and Republican campaigns, nothing is going to change until Americans reject the false choices presented to them by these two parties.
