rgbs: I think you miss an important point: Most people in poorer countries will not buy a more expensive (to purchase) fridge because of limited funds, even though in the end, it will save them a considerable amount of money. This is where micro-financing, teaming with an organization like Kiva, comes into play.
Your questions are good ones. "So what happens to the fridges?" Most, if not all the metal (pumps, motors, pipes, coils...) can be recycled since they are made of high value materials. The larger, insulated part can be used for several things: cooler (ice chest), water tank, grain storage-safe from pests...) (Finding uses for discarded fridges could be a good project.)
Maybe someone reading this can give us figures on the carbon costs of dismantling fridges. I would think however, that would depend a lot on the techniques used (manual vs. machine labor) and the amount of transportation involved.)
"Good management is the art of making problems so interesting and their solutions so constructive that everyone wants to get to work and deal with them." Paul Hawken
