I will say this, I have cause to read this article twice. And I think I will. Which - is that not the point of a site like this? To cause one to reevaluate?

Education
response to Sarah Goldstein and Ramona Rosales's post Harlem's Headmaster
A very close friend of mine is a teacher in a low-income social demographic where most of the students are first generation in this country. The cards are already stacked against these children, and each teacher plays such a huge role in how these children develop. Every insentive absolutely counts. I grew up in a household where there was never a question of IF I would go to college, the question was just WHERE. I didn't need teachers to encourage me. Not all students are so fortunate. All of this aside, my teacher friend too, is anti-Union. Of course, she is a member of the union, but she is able to recognize the shortcomings. This article hits the nail on the head that although unions can protect and should protect groups, the students do not have a union. The red tape can prevent giving students the best chance they have at success.

I was completely unaware of this. This is an example of where spreading the word can make all the difference! The reality is, the easier and more convenient sharing and contributing is made, the more likely the capable people with active lives will give. Keep on spreading!

response to Jeffrey Sachs, Robin Cameron, Lindsay Utz, Bristol Baughan, Ben Goldhirsh, Toni Rossi, Ben Bloodwell, and Ronan Killeen's post Falsely Accused
It is so easy to be sympathetic with no action. Articles like this remind me that we CAN do something, and we MUST do something. All the good intentions in the world do nothing and it is important to focus on the changes you CAN make. We can effect the world, and each little bit does count. Thank you for pointing out that the solutions exist, and it is up to each individual to make the choice to do something about it.

Education
response to Rudy Adler's post Michael Silverblatt on books
I love reading. But I just don't have time to read anymore. I know that's a relative term, so thank you for pointing that out. I grew up a reader. My mom is a librarian and my father is a teacher. Now that I read far less than I ever did, I find my vocabulary deteriorating . But you make an extremely valid point about the way in which reading is taught. Another contributing factor is the notion of being forced to read. Reading for pure enjoyment needs to be encouraged in our schools.
I look forward to your recommendations. I need to read more. For fun.
